How to tie a Lanyard/Diamond Knot

I use this knot for a lot of things I do. It is used as a fastener in a Paracord Bracelet and I tie my neck knife cord together with it. I like this knot, as a knot that is not only secure but is also decorative.

There are lots of ways to tie this knot, you can find them on places like YouTube but..

This is how I tie this knot…..

First take a piece of paper and make 2 holes about 2 inches apart and put both ends of your cord through the paper.

Then take the left-hand cord and make a loop…

Take the right-hand cord and place it over the left-hand cord. Place it under the loop but over the cord and then under the trailing end so that your loop looks like an eye.

Now take the end of the right-hand cord and pass it through the eye. Over, under, over, to leave the right cord at the top of the eye and a diamond shape in the middle of the cord.

We now need to put both ends around and through the diamond in the middle. The left-hand cord end goes around the top of the design and through the diamond and the right-hand cord goes around the bottom of the design and through the middle of the diamond.

It looks a bit messy at this point but don’t worry the next stage is to pull and tug and tweak it until you are happy with your knot.

When you are done tweaking it should look something like this..

For a bit of fun we tried to do the knot with animation. Thanks to my youngest daughter Emily.. she was the editor and producer of this short film. We hope you enjoy it…

Thanks for looking and hope you find a lot of uses for this knot. I will be tying a Paracord bracelet in the How to.. and the knot will be used as a fastener.

I’m just gearing up to start paracord weaving. After many hours..many weeks researching ‘How To’, your instructables are the best, by any measure. I printed them out on my B/W Lazerjet and they are as easy to read as looking at my PC.
So, so happy I found you. Look forward to your future work.

    Thank You, Joann

This is a wonderfully clear explanation of how to tie a diamond knot. A question that appeared during my practice knots: how do I keep the loop end smaller than demonstrated?

If I think what you are asking about is the loop created by the knot, all I do is shorten the loop at the start of the knot and then adjust the size of the loop by loosening the knot and then tightening with the loop make larger or smaller. Its hard to explain in text but I hope that helps. Many thanks for looking at our blog
